Summary: Sometimes, Prince Charming is just a few years away.
Tumblr media
As much as he wanted, Jack knew he couldn’t wait forever. Every year that he waited for Ennis to come to him, took something away from his heart. He knew why Ennis never did, hell, he understood better than anyone else. But that didn’t mean that the pain didn’t go away. The pain of being put aside for him to live a life that they both knew he didn’t like, with his only bright side being his girls. Yes, Ennis Del Mar was a stubborn son of a bitch, and so was Jack Twist. Which meant they both held out hope that the other one would come to their senses and leave.
After his last visit with Ennis, Jack decided enough was enough. He couldn’t continue on meeting up with him every once in a while to spend the night together, and then return him back to his wife and kids the next morning. His heart hurt to do it, but it was for the best. Ennis looked relieved and depressed at the news, which didn’t make dropping him off any easier on Jack. But it had to be done, for both of their sakes. Which lead Jack to wandering across America. The divorce had put things into perspective for him, and now he was trying to enjoy life as best he could.
Eventually, Jack settled back on Brokeback Mountain. The place that felt more like home than anywhere else. The man felt the sun start to peak over the horizon and onto his face from the window in his bedroom. He groaned and turned over, but felt something heavy and warm wrapped around him. The warm something against his back, and the distinct lack of coffee smell let him know that his companion had yet to wake up and get started on the day today. Jack heard a groan behind him, and felt the warm body nuzzle further into his neck from behind. The early morning, the smells of the mountain, and the company with him pulled Jack into a welcome memory.
~
“‘Scuse me, sir?” Jack turned around and beheld a man with a beautiful, but worn Stetson on his head. The espresso brown color complimented the mystery man’s skin, eyes, and the little bit of hair peaking through.
“Anyone sittin’ here?” The mystery man asked, and pointed to the only other available seat at the bar. Jack shook his head and motioned for the man to sit down, which he did. Flagging down the bartender, he heard a honey smooth voice order a double whiskey on the rocks. He sounded like a man after Jack’s heart.
“Whatcha doin’ in a place like this? You look like a city boy.” Jack’s eyebrows shot up to the top of his head as he slowly looked over his shoulder at the man. The look he was giving him must have been enough to convey the emotion he felt being called a city boy, because the mystery man started to talk once more.
“Oh, ‘m sorry. Me and my big mouth. I-I-I meant that you look really clean cut for being out in a workin’ part of town like this. Not that you…” he trailed off, mumbling to himself about the trouble his mouth was about to get him into. The man reminded Jack a lot of him when he was younger and more full of vigor. He started to chuckle lightly as he turned to face the man more.
“You’re alrigh’, I suppose. What’s your name?” The whiskey in his hands felt warmer than usual, as Jack watched the man’s face. The man supplied him with his name, and let himself roll it over his tongue a couple times before giving him his own. It was strange for Jack to be back in this position all these years later, now weathered and hurt. But it reminded him of the good times he had, and hoped for more to come.
“So, what brings you out here, Jack?” He asked, nursing the whiskey in his hands. He laughed humorlessly and thought about his answer.
“Just tired of living for everyone else. All my folks ran me off, so I’m just wanderin’ now. What about you? Your folks run you off?” A flash of blonde hair and a white hat passed over his mind, but the response wasn’t right.
“I guess I’m the same. I’m tired of survivin’ for everyone else. I wanna live for me.” And like that, the sweet chocolate brown eyes flashed away from memory. The gruff voice was replaced by this honey laced one. Same situation, different outcome. It took Jack a long time to realize that this was the beginning of the rest of his life.
~
Being pulled back into the present, soft kisses were pressed against Jack’s shoulders, neck, and back. He hummed at the affection and let himself sink further into the embrace. The head that the devilish lips were attached to peaked over his shoulder and came into view.
“Good morning, cowboy.” His partner said, voice stifled with sleep. He dropped his head on Jack’s chest and let the other man card his hands through his hair.
“Good morning, beau.” Jack responded as he pressed a small kiss to his head. They laid there for a moment more before his partner had to get up, and he made it known. Groaning, he shuffled over Jack, stretched, and walked over to grab a pair of jeans off the floor. Jack simply admired the man from behind, and made no move to get out of bed just yet.
“You wan’ some coffee, cowboy?” He asked, hand waiting on the door. Jack leveled him a deadpan look.
“Does that damn rooster wake us up every morning?” The man laughed as he walked out the door of their bedroom, and left Jack laying down in their shared bed. He knew he needed to get up. He had to help with taking care of their ranch, but everything seemed peaceful right now. He’d hate to disturb it, but it needed to be done. After a few minutes of staying in the warm bed, and letting the sunrise get him awake, Jack stood and went to go find a pair of jeans and a shirt. He stuffed his feet into a pair of socks, before grabbing another flannel shirt and heading to the kitchen.
The sight was something to behold when he finally arrived in the kitchen. His partner stood with his back to the threshold, and lost in his own world. He hummed quietly as the coffee was brewing on the stovetop, with the radio guiding him along in tune and tempo. As he watched the man in the kitchen go about his routine, Jack ran his hands over the flannel in his hands that he was going to offer. Their life together so far flashed in his head as he quietly observed. He came up behind the shirtless man and wrapped his arms around his shoulders, while tucking his head into the little spot where the neck met the shoulder. Jack felt his partner’s head tip back onto his own shoulder and the two began to sway gently. The music, the smell of the coffee, and the sound of the great outdoors that awaited them all helped set the mood of the morning.
Both were just content. They were content to be with each other, content to live where they did, and content to be themselves. It was easier to be themselves away from the prying eyes of society. The same ones that called their lifestyle sinful while having multiple affairs. But that didn’t matter out here. Here, they were just there. No heavy deadlines, or appearances to keep. No watching what they say, or how they act. It was freeing to be them out here. Jack watched with droopy eyes as his partner placed several spoonfuls of sugar into his mug and went to add a splash of milk. While Jack didn’t need the milk, it was a nice touch when they could afford it. He watched the man fix his own cup of coffee before dragging them both over to the table in the dining room. Jack had totally missed the food that was already there. How long had it been that his partner left their bedroom?
“Here you go, cowboy. Eat up. We’ve gotta go repair that fence today.” The man said, digging into his eggs and sausage. Jack groaned around a mouthful of eggs and threw his head back.
“Seriously? How many times have we had to fix that damn fence this month?” He continued to tear into his toast and breakfast while they talked.
“Three. That’s because of the damn sheep. They just don’t leave it the hell alone. Which reminds me, we’ve gotta eat anythin’ that can go bad soon. We’re movin’ the sheep ‘cross the mountain again this summer.” Jack was amazed at his ability to multitask like that. It surely couldn’t have been easy but he made it appear so.
“Damn it. Okay. We takin’ Jesse with us, right?” He asked, biting off a piece of toast.
“Yep. We’re gettin’ a little raise from last year’s adventure but it will be enough to pay for the fence and then some.” The men finished their meals with some small talk, mostly about the day ahead. With plates in the sink, and mugs in hand, a now full dressed couple stood on the porch, and watched the land. Jesse came up as soon as she saw her owners with a dead squirrel in her mouth and tail a wagging. They laughed and got the squirrel away from her before resting. The same routine everyday, but they loved it. One last moment of piece before they would turn in for the night later on.
They drank their coffee and enjoyed the blissful state of nature around them. Jesse laid at their feet, while Jack wrapped his right arm around his partner’s shoulders. He felt his partner do the same but with his left arm. Jack turned and pressed a kiss to his partner’s head and nuzzled further into the hair that he fell in love with years ago. He always imagined that he would be doing this with Ennis. That’s what his heart wanted for twenty years; twenty years of longing, pain, love, and heartache. But this was even better. A partner that loved him as he loved him, one that stood by his side but called him out when he needed to. Someone to live out his happily ever after with with no doubt that he would crawl through fire and glass just to see Jack happy. Maybe it’s not with who he originally thought it would be, but happily ever after takes a little time to get sometimes.

It's been a little over two years since I first watched Brokeback Mountain. I never imagined that would lead to me writing so many fics for Jack and Ennis, but here we are. One of them has just become my most viewed fic, which is nice 🙂
Tumblr media
I love these characters and think about them, and their sad story, every day.
Here is the fic in question.

The bad news is that with all the excitement and challenges that come with moving to a different country, I seem to have very little brain capacity for reading anything but fanfics so far
The good news is that our first class assignment is literally to read and prepare for a discussion of Brokeback Mountain, so it should be a smooth enough transition

(Lip Gallagher x male reader)
summary: when Ian leaves the club for good, he brings home a friend from work to crash at the Gallagher house for a bit. Lip is drawn to him a bit more than he'd like to admit, and he isn't sure what it means.
"who's this?" Lip questions as he enters the gallagher house to find Ian on the couch and next to him, another guy of a seemingly similar age. a few bags are on the floor between them. the guy looks sheepish as Ian speaks up.
"this is Y/N, we worked together at the club. left that place for good and he decided to join me. he's gonna stay here for a bit, i'll take care of him though. don't worry about it." Ian explains and Lip nods, lighting up a cig as he walks to the kitchen. "good to meet you," he mumbles as he walks off, and you sigh in relief.
you felt awful, really, intruding on your friends house like this, but when Ian announced he was sick of being thrown around like a piece of meat at the club and was going to leave for good, you figured you'd follow. tips weren't nearly as good as they used to be, so they stopped making up for the whole starving-yourself-just-to-be-groped-by-old-guys thing. you didn't have a plan for leaving. no family and no friends who weren't in similar situations, so Ian suggested you crash at his family's place till you figure it out. Ian could be crazy unhinged, but he was a damn good friend.
Ian invites you upstairs and you pick up your stuff, it isn't much, but it proves to be quite heavy. you see Ian's brother - you're sure his name is Phil or something - in the kitchen. he's in an off white wife-beater drinking orange juice from the carton and you notice his arms are pretty nice. then you realise lusting after your friends brother who you're staying with for the forseeable probably isn't smart.
you decide to get an early night, Ian helps you settle in and says goodnight. you can't thank him enough for it all, really. he leaves to head downstairs as you try get some sleep.
"so, new friend, huh?" Lip asks Ian as they share a cig on the back porch,
"yeah, he used to be a dancer at the club, same as me," Ian explains as he takes a puff,
"so we got another gay under the gallagher roof then?" Lip jokes with a bit too much intensity and he cringes, because he doesn't mean it that way, "i feel like a dick, you know, not saying hi or anything."
"nah don't worry about it, he's just glad you didn't throw him out the second you saw him." this makes Lip smile and he doesn't know why,
"cool." he says, tossing the burnt-out cig and heading inside. and when he walks past his old room where Y/N is asleep he pretends he doesn't want to crack open the door and check on him. and when he tries to sleep he hopes the fact he can't stop thinking about another guy doesn't mean anything.
the next morning Y/N comes downstairs ready to make a better impression, Lip is at the breakfast table, just about the leave when he sees you.
"hey," Lip nods to you and Y/N greets him back, "you want some of this? i gotta leave soon anyway."
when Lip passes Y/N the plate their hands brush and Lip's lingers for a bit longer than it maybe should've. when Y/N looks right in his eyes he feels too strange not to leave right there. so he does, and Y/N is left at the table, flustered and very confused. and maybe a bit too hopeful.
Ian is outside on the porch drinking a beer when Y/N finds him and sits with him. Ian offers the bottle and Y/N takes it, taking a sip and grimacing.
"tastes like the club." you joke and Ian chuckles taking another swig, "so, your brother- Phil?"
"Lip." he corrects,
"yeah, Lip, what's his deal anyway?" you ask, trying not to sound too curious, and the look Ian gives you makes you think you didn't do a very good job.
"what d'you mean?" he looks at you, puzzled,
"i dunno, he seems...edgy? like nervous, he practically threw himself out the door when i came down for breakfast." you joke and take another sip of the cold drink you're sharing,
"huh, doesn't sound like Lip...maybe he's into you" Ian gives you a look and you both burst into a fit of laughter. Ian is laughing because the idea of his own brother liking another guy AND getting flustered around him is a joke in his mind. Y/N is laughing because he's not sure what else to do when he can't help but feel drawn to his new temporary roommates very attractive, very enigmatic, very straight brother.
on the other side of the city, Lip throws a book across an empty room because he can't get you out of his head. when he picks the textbook up off the ground, he isn't sure if he recognises the hands infront of him.
that night, Lip gets home late. it's dark outside and in the Gallagher house. dark and strangely, quiet. Ian's already upstairs in bed, having an early night. Lip sniffles from the cold and takes his jacket off, throwing it over the couch, when he flicks on the room light, he sees Y/N sat at the kitchen island.
Lip nods to him because he's not sure what else to do, "couldn't sleep", Y/N says and offers the cigarette in his hands over to Lip, who walks over and tentatively takes it, bringing it to his lips. he's still close enough now that when he exhales, the smoke blows into Y/N's face. Lip's eyes shine bright in the still-dim light.
Lip flicks the cig away, not caring where it lands and Y/N's brow furrows until Lip grabs his face and slams his lips onto his. it's rough and messy because Lip is scared and Y/N is surprised. it would hurt a lot more if they both hadn't secretly craved it for days. when Lip pulls away his blue eyes look apologetic and just as he plans to brush the whole thing off, apologise, it was his bad, and take off upstairs or outside or anywhere else, Y/N grabs his face again and pulls him into a much more gentle kiss.
it's still a bit aggressive, but deliciously so. Lip's hands aren't sure where to go until they find themselves on Y/N's back. and he feels steady, and strong. and okay. this is okay. when Y/N's hands tenderly tangle themselves in his hair they both smile into the kiss.
when they finally part, their eyes both shine in the dim light with the kind of happiness you can only get from a night like this. with dim light, and a guy you can't stop thinking about. and everything smells and tastes of cigarette smoke.
and when they both go to sleep that night, they can finally close their eyes.

3:10 to Yuma Fanfic Ideas!
Have you just seen 3:10 to Yuma (2007) or rewatched it, only to look on AO3 and realize, "There isn't a wide variety of Fanfiction, damn it's more empty than my wallet!" Well, if you're in the writing mood or need plot ideas, I've got you!
(These can be used for more than just 3:10 to Yuma, but using it for 3:10 to Yuma would be so amazing.❤️)
Wade and Dan living together to 'help' Dan pay rent💀😭
3:10 to Yuma but Dan survives and becomes changed by the overall experience while Wade becomes a good person since Dan has broken his perspective on the world.
Dan dies and Wade tells his story(can be written in many different ways)
Dan survives and takes care of Wade's injuries that he gained from the whole trip to get to the train.
Modern Au where Ben Wade is part of a motorcycle gang and Dan is whatever job you think he should have.
Alice leaves, Wade and Dan raise William and Mark😱
Coffee shop AU! But Dan works at a coffee shop and Wade is an artist or just goes there to draw. (Can take place in a modern au or in the original setting time)
Ben Wade and Dan Evans are just friends who travel together after 3:10 to Yuma (with Dan surviving.)
Wade is nice to Dan but Dan doesn't like it too much because it makes him feel inferior (can be applied to listed fanfic ideas)
Brokeback Mountain.
I'm sure you can tell all of these are Dan x Wade. If you guys want Dan x Alice, or a different ship, lemme know, I can also try to come up with other shops than Ben Wade x Dan Evans.

Jack Twist x Male reader anyone? Like I get the story that is being told with Brokeback Mountain, but the fact that Jack didn't get his happily ever after on a ranch is something that keeps me up at night. But does anyone want to read that? Just a little something where we can all pretend that Jack got to be happy.

Fic Ideas that will not leave my brain, but writing and me don't get along no matter how much I love it.
A fic of Parkthur going through the plot of Brokeback Mountain. Ennis is Arthur, Jack is Parker
Some wolf/dog John story, maybe snapshots of his perspective during particularly canine moments, or he gets a wolf or werewolf body.
Percy Jackson and The Mechanisms crossover. Probably following the vague plot of PJO, and one for Magnus Chase.
Simple cute Parkthur fic, where Arthur is remembering their eventual fall into love, and at the end he meets him again either resurrected or didn't really die. Dancing will be included somewhere
Maybe something from Anna Stancyzk's POV
John meets Parker or/and Faroe, and recounts it to Arthur.
Maybe finishing that one Kunizai fic if I get back into BSD.
I'm having a really hard time with motivation so maybe this will make my brain make me do it. If you wanna write one of these tag me!

“Sometimes I miss you so much I just can’t stand it.”
Adam avoided eye contact, consumed by emotions that pulled him like a riptide towards the shore. Lawrence looked out of the corner of his green, pained eyes. Adam resembled a guilty dog, unable to hold steady under the weight of his feelings. Meanwhile, Lawrence observed with keen attention, absorbing Adam's words like pellets from a bb gun, each one piercing and settling into his vital organs.
“You hear me? I miss you so damn much, Lawrence.”
Lawrence habitually clicked back his zippo lighter, savoring the metallic snap against the flare of the flame that lit his cigarette. As he took in the smoke, he adjusted his tan hat casting a shadow over his face.
Chain smoking had become a habit at this point; one pack a day became two, two became three, then he lost count. Anything to dull the emotions. Any price to stop the feeling, even if it meant suffocating them in the blackened depths of his ash-coated lungs.
Lawrence exhaled a cloud of smoke and reclined in the white folding chair. “I hear you,” he responded, casting a glance at Adam's hollow expression. The doctor leaned in, urging the cowboy nearer. With a shove of the chair, Adam folded into him, almost swallowing him as he buried his face in Lawrence's dark blue dress shirt. “I hear you, Adam. I really, really do.”
“Amanda knows,” Adam muffled into Lawrence’s flannel shirt, the sound reverbing into the fabrics. “She’s gotta know. She ain’t tried to sleep with me in a few months now, always out with her girlfriends. I bet Kramer would pay me just to get outta there.”
Lawrence ran his hand through the other man’s dark hair, pressing his lips against his head in a tender display of affection that sent a chill down Adam’s spine. These small gestures felt profoundly intimate, grounding them in their secluded hillside sanctuary, the forest around them hushed and the campfire casting a comforting, warm glow.
“You know that isn’t possible right now, Adam.”
The stars twinkled with a specific brilliance on these nights, a stark contrast to the scars etched on Adam’s face and the occasional shaving nicks on Lawrence’s. Their very own constellations on Brokeback Mountain, the personal stars they took home everytime they parted.
“I wish it was Lawrence. I wish it goddamn was.”
Lawrence held onto the other man tightly, cradling his head in his hands and drawing him closer. Fighting back a tear, he breathed into the other man’s hair, kissing him deeply, as though he were the most cherished treasure imaginable.
“I know. We just gotta stand it.”
The doctor felt the other man fading off to sleep as he held him, and whispered a confession under his breath, the other man was the only one in his world, and he had no idea.
“I love you. I love you. I’m so sorry.”
Adam wasn’t asleep; far from it. He lifted his head, meeting Lawrence's embarrassed and shocked gaze. He looked as though he had been struck, like a beloved dog taken out to the back and shot, but with love - killed in the most tender way. There was no retracting those words now. Adam looked like a kid on christmas, small tears forming in his eyelids..
“Lawrence. I love you.”
As they dashed forward, their lips met, and Lawrence’s guilty demeanor melted away. In that fleeting moment, all his fears dissolved. No one could hurt them here, no threatening glances, no hateful words—just the two of them, alone on Brokeback Mountain. Completely alone. Just the two of them.

Fandom: Brokeback Mountain Summary: Jack drove all the way up from Texas when he got that call from Ennis letting him know that the divorce had been finalized. When Ennis tries to send him away without even giving him a chance to talk, he flies off the handle. Warnings: Mpreg, pregnancy, mentions of violence, mentions of homophobia, and infidelity Word Count: 3,091 Ship(s): Ennis Del Mar/Jack Twist
Archive link!
For a kid that had only ever had to drive for an hour at a time when they were traveling to his grandparents estate in the woods, Bobby was handling the trip from Texas to Wyoming very well. He had transitioned from flicking through the radio stations to find something interesting to staring out of the window to reading a book, at least until he got carsick. Jack was glad that he had been the one handling the majority of the parenting for when Bobby was young when that happened.
“Almost there,” Jack muttered as he reached down and turned on the music again. He had been turning it on and off as they passed through dead zones. He knew every single one of them, since he had been driving up to Wyoming several times a year every single year for more than a decade. Bobby had barely even noticed and hadn’t asked any questions, which was nice.
“You’ve been saying that for the past hour and a half, Daddy,” Bobby commented. He was looking out of the window again, the sickly green of his face from his bout with motion sickness now only clinging to the top of his cheeks and ears.
“Well, when the drive is fourteen hours the last two start to feel real short,” Jack replied. “Plus I gotta pee again. Ennis house may be way smaller than ours, but I know it’s gotta a place to piss.”
“You’ve had to pee every half hour. That’s why it’s taking so long,” Bobby complained.
“Yeah, well, I gotta medical reason for that,” Jack commented. He pursed his lips and then cleared his throat as he gripped the steering well a bit tighter. The thought had been on his mind since they had left their house in Texas, all the things that they’d need immediately packed into the trunk of the car. Lureen was allegedly going to mail out the rest of their things once they had a permanent address for her to do so. He hadn’t yet told Bobby the reason that all of this was happening and he felt bad for it, but he wanted to be able to give his son the entire story.
Bobby looked at him like he was waiting for the reason, and when it became apparent that nothing was coming he turned his head and looked away. Jack kept an eye on his son as they continued down the dirt and barely pathed paths that led Jack back to the man that he had always wanted. Guilt grew more and more in his stomach as he began to realize just what he had done to all of the people in his life.
He had loved Lureen like any man would love a woman, she was a good wife that didn’t nag too much but was a shitty absent mother. He had broken her heart when the truth had come out and she realized who and what he really was. He had broken Bobby’s heart by forcing him to move away from all the friends that he had made back in Texas and the family that he had known far better than Jack’s folks. He was driving to Ennis with boxes full of stuff, a story about a divorce on his ear and lips, and the biggest secret that he had ever kept in his entire life. He knew that there was a very good chance that this could end up with his heart shattered into pieces, but the money from the Lureen’s daddy sat heavy in his shirt pocket to remind him that he had a way to support himself while everything was getting figured out.
“I want you to stay in the car with the windows up, there’s a chill and I don’t want you getting the flu before we even get to meet grandma and grandpa,” Jack said when they finally pulled into the driveway that led to Ennis’ house. While they were driving, he had been afraid that he wouldn’t be able to find the place since he had only sent postcards to it before. Given that it was the only house down the dusty road, though, it was easy to find the trailer.
“Fine, Daddy,” Bobby sighed. Jack knew that it wasn’t really fair to ask that of his son given that they had both been in the car for the same amount of time and deserved to stretch their legs, but it was important. He needed to have a discussion with Ennis without his son around, that was part of the reason he hadn’t actually told Bobby about why they were moving or the exact reasons the divorce had happened.
“Ennis Del Mar!” Jack shouted excited. Despite the anxiety and nervousness that had plagued him since that first day he had gotten himself into this situation, the moment that he saw that mop of blond, curly hair, he felt it all wash away from him at once. Ennis looked just as he had the last time that they had disappeared into the wilderness together. He had never really aged, other than more freckles than the last time they had seen each other as he began to spend more time int he sun without his hat.
“Jack, what are you doing here?” Ennis asked. He stepped away from the truck where he had been talking to someone through the window and then walked in the same path that Jack was taking. The two of them were quickly in each other’s arms, the same magnetism that they had experienced all those years ago bringing them back together. It felt right, reassuring and proper in a way that barely anything else in Jack’s life ever had before. He hoped that he got to experience that emotion again once their conversation was over.
“Well, I heard about the divorce and figured that I would come up,” Jack began.
They pulled apart from the hug and Jack’s hand moved on its own without even asking him what he wanted it to do. He was cupping the back of Ennis’ head, his fingers brushing over the longer of the golden brown curls that clung to his scalp. His eyes flicked down from the beautiful eyes that he could find himself lost in to the perfectly curved lips that he had kissed so many times before. He was a breath away from leaning forward and recreating the experience for the upteenth time when Ennis pulled fully away from him.
“The girls are in the car, s’all,” Ennis said as he pointed back towards the truck. “Got them for the weekend, so figured that we should spend as much of it together as we could. Now that I don’t get to see them every day after work outside of the overnights.”
“Makes sense,” Jack sighed. He turned back to look through the window of his own car and saw that Bobby had slunk down in his seat again. Poor boy was probably sore from the waist down from being in the same position for most of the day. Hopefully it would be over soon and both of them could go up to Lightning Flat to have an awkward dinner with Jack’s parents.
Before he had the chance to say anything else, Ennis turned them back towards the truck that he had been leaning on moments before. “Jack, these are my girls. Alma Junior and Jenny, this is Jack Twist,” Ennis introduced them with a vague motion from his hand. It was such an Ennis move that it made the longing in the pit of Jack’s stomach wrench his guts up into a ball.
Ennis turned back around, mirroring the action that Jack had done earlier by hiding his hands in his pockets. “You see why I can’t do this on this weekend? Gotta spend time with them where I can.”
“Normally I would take that and just go,” Jack said. He shoved his hands down into the pockets of his jeans as he tried to deal with the feelings that were tumultuously brewing in his chest, threatening to spill from his lips in a much less eloquent way than he wanted them to.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Ennis asked. His eyes narrowed in that way that meant something dangerous was about to come. Jack had only ever seen it when he was doing something like this, objecting over a very fair offer that had been given to him by the grace in Ennis’ heart.
Jack rocked back and forth twice on his feet just to find something more to do with himself. He was stalling when he really shouldn’t, because the matter that he was planning on talking to Ennis about was more serious than one of their dates up into the mountains. “Ennis, we have to talk about something and we have to talk about it now. If we don’t talk about it right here and now then I’m going to lose my nerve.”
The other cowboy’s eyes went wide with alarm and he glanced back to his car. “I’ll just be a second girls, promise!” he called to them as he grabbed Jack’s arm and then led them a few more feet from where they had been before. He was grateful for it, he knew that he could only admit this secret to three or four people that day and he hadn’t really counted on Ennis’ girls being one of them even if he was sure that they were perfectly charming.
“What’s going on with you, Jack Twist? You ride all the way up here uninvited because you hear that I’m divorced and now you’re refusing to leave? I hope you don’t think that I left Alma for you,” Ennis said. Jack could see the hut in his eyes over that notion and understood then that the divorce the other had was very different than the one that Jack had.
He and Lureen had never been in love with each other. They had found each other at a rodeo and then she’d ended up in the family way. She was from one of the really proper wealthy families that were littered around the west, so when she found out that she was going to have a baby it resulted in a tidal wave of things. They had gotten married, bought a house, and retired from the rodeo work that they had both loved to do so that they could work with her father instead. Neither of them had felt any love lost when they had signed the divorce paperwork and Jack had actually been excited because now he had the money to get himself a house and some proper equipment for the ranch on Lightning Flat.
Ennis, on the the other hand, had mentioned Alma more times than Jack could count when they were up on Brokeback Mountain. He knew that she had been the only girl that had ever given him the time of day and they were close simply because they were both quiet. They had found companionship with each other and when that broke it hurt. They had also had two children together long after they were married instead of their first kid being conceived in the back of a car because they were too fast. It was a divorce that never should have happened and obviously hurt them both very much. Jack would be sure not to step on toes about it in the future, but he had to tread all over them in that moment before Ennis never found out about his own dirty secret.
“You remember the last time that we went up to the Mountain? You were in a surly way and you said that you had to be the one on top so that you could get the aggression out without putting my headfirst into the river,” Jack explained.
“Don’t pretend that you didn’t like it, I saw the way that you looked at me after that punch that first summer,” Ennis replied, his drawl a little thicker and his eyes a little heavier.
“Yeah, yeah, but that’s besides the point right now,” Jack immediately shut him down. If Ennis hadn’t been willing to talk to him with his girls in the truck then the blond would thank Jack for not dragging him further into those feelings of lust that they were always thrown into when they were around one another. “I started feeling like shit when I got back to Texas. Thought that it was that shit feeling that we manage to give each other every time we’re apart, feeling like we left our souls or hearts or whatever behind on the mountain. But then it turned physical, starting puking and pissing all the time. Clothes got tight, so I went to the doctor. I’m pregnant, Ennis.”
He didn’t know what reaction he was expecting from the other man, but arms around his body hadn’t been one of them. He had been expecting anger and shouting, maybe even another swift punch to the face, but not elatement and joy. Ennis had been so terrified of the idea that someone might find out that they were together that they had only ever met each other in a hotel once, every other time they had camped up in the woods despite their aging bodies not agreeing with it anymore.
“You alright there, En?” Jack asked as he dropped his hands down to where they belonged when they were holding each other. It felt almost foriegn to be displaying that kind of affection for each other when they both knew that their children were in their respective cars.
“I fucking hate you,” Ennis whispered.
That made his heart seize with desperation. He couldn’t hear that Ennis hated him, not right now. Their baby was growing in his belly and he needed support, he had just lost it in all the other forms that he had. His parents certainly weren’t going to like that he was pregnant and even if they did manage to persuade Ennis to marry Jack, then he would just be in the same place that he had been in with Lureen but finding more heartache around each corner.
Ennis pulled back, one of his large hands cupping the back of Jack’s head so that their eyes could look into the other’s. It made Jack feel like their souls were pouring out and into each other all at once. “Why do you hate me?” Jack asked, hating the broken way that the words dropped from his lips.
“You made me fall in love with you that first summer, and then I had to go down and be a good man. I had told Alma that I would marry her and so that was what I did. I was terrified of someone finding out that I loved another man more than I loved her, because that meant that someone might take their shitty feelings out on me. I know now that was what really happened to that man I saw in the ditch. He wasn’t killed cause he was a queer, he was killed because someone got their panties in a twist about words that were never actually written in God’s book. I couldn’t tear you away from your wife and son, I knew that you had made yourself a life like I did. Wouldn’t be fair of me to come crawling to you when I had blown up my life and beg you to do the same.”
“That doesn’t explain why you hate me, Ennis Del Mar,” Jack said. What Ennis was saying was sweet and kind in all the ways that he needed to be. His heart felt like it was bleeding into his chest, he was lightheaded and he knew that there were tears threatening to spill down his face like a river.
“I hate you because you’re giving me everything that I wanted. I loved Alma because she was the only person that gave me the time of day, not because we had some kind of connection. We got along fine, but not the way that I get along with you. I want this, I want us to be together and I want to raise a baby with you. Nothing can hold us back from this anymore,” Ennis grinned.
“Did you have some kind of divine vision or something? Is that what Methodists believe in?” Jack asked, narrowing his eyes as he searched for the anger that he had been expecting in some form or another.
“I have faith, Jack Twist. I don’t know about God or the Holy Spirit or anything like that, but I know you. You make things work when they’re not supposed to. You can make me talk more than I have in an entire year, you can make sheep appear outta nowhere without marks on their fleece, you can stay on the back of a bucking bronco for longer than I could ever dream. You make things happen and you’re making our family happen,” Ennis insisted.
Jack grinned, unable to stop the butterfly of feelings that rushed through his body and made him feel like nothing more than a giddy schoolgirl. “So you saying that the offer of the ranch is finally on the table nice and proper?”
“Not so much on the table as underway,” Ennis replied. One of his hands came down to hold Jack’s hand while the other cupped his stomach. They stayed like that for only a second before they leaned forward and shared a kiss with one another, not caring that their children were watching them.
The kids would learn. They got to know each other and their new step-parent, adjusting far faster than either man had expected. Bobby liked his other grandparents very much since they were quiet and respectful of his wishes while not just giving him everything that he wanted. They lived in Ennis’ cramped trailer while their house was being built, a quaint three story on the other end of Lightning Flat. Jenny and Junior visited as often as Alma and her new husband would allow them, which wasn’t very but they made the best of the time that they were permitted. Faith Twist was born six months after both men had divorced and then remarried each other. She had a hard life ahead of her, full of bigotry and idiocy, but her parents were stronger than they seemed and would fight for her no matter what.
